QUESTION 2:
2. The importance of cross media convergence and synergy in production, distribution and marketing.
Synergy: when two perfectly capable large names come together to produce a higher quality product.
Cross Media Convergence: when varying types of media are used for the same purpose(e.g Tv trailers and internet websites to promote a film)
________________________________________________________________________________
Inglourious Basterds:
Produced by Universal Pictures
Distributed by Universal Home Entertainment
Universal Pictures is one of the oldest film producing companies with over 5,000 film titles under their belts since 1912.
This is England:
Produced by Warp Films
Distributed by Optimum Releasing
Only hollywood title Warp Films has been involved in is 'Law Abiding Citizen' and that kinda sucked...
_______________________________________________________________________________
Inglourious basterds:
Universal Pictures and its Subsiduary Universal Home Entertainment is one of the largest distributors in the world, distributing this film to 3,165 theaters.
Universal Pictures have some very famous titles such as 'the bourne ultimatum' 'knocked up' 'american gangster' and 'drag me to hell'
it is a subsiduary of General Electric, the largest media conglomerate in the entire world, and also has many subiduaries of its own such as universal home entertainment, universal casting studios, etc.

MARKETING
Inglourious Basterds was premiered at the Cannes Film festival, advertised on NBC's 26 television stations, and also broadcast on Bravo and Scifi. an example of synergy here is the trailer was shown on FOX and FX, which are owned by Newscorp.
there was posters, a soundtrack and merchandise(t-shirts) sold after its DVD release.
This is England had trailers shown on film4 and channel 4, and HMV sold posters and advertised it before it was released. there was a much smaller audience to the adverts of This Is England as blockbusters can afford to broadcast on much more popular channels. Also, a TV series was made after the bluray release.
QUESTION 1: cross media convergence.
1. The issues raised by media ownership in contemporary media practice.
Vertical Intergration: the company controls and owns every company to do with its products production and development.
problems: if one thing goes wrong in one of the sub companies, the whole system crashes down.
e.g if the factory goes bankrupt, the product will not be released as it cannot be mass produced and the company would collapse.
Horizontal Intergration: Where the company has many other businesses so if one fails, the other can be fell back on. e.g Virgin
problems: the companies do not as strong a control over its sub companies.
______________________________________________________________________________
Budget Comparison:
Inglourious Basterds: $70,000,000 budget
funded by Universal Pictures, a sub company for the media conglomerate and top of the 6 biggest media conglomerates, General Electric.
production companies involved: A Band Apart, The Weinstein Company.
This Is England: £1,500,000 budget approx.
funded by the UK film council.

Production Companies involved:
Inglourious Basterds:
The Weinstein Company: http://www.imdb.com/company/co0150452/
A Band Apart: http://www.imdb.com/company/co0019267/
Both of these companies have experience in both minor indie films/documentaries and major blockbusters(mainly tarantino movies but still).
This Is England:
Big Arty Productions: http://www.imdb.com/company/co0135852/
EM media: http://www.imdb.com/company/co0091923/
Both of these companies have not been involved in a major blockbuster, only minor British independent or Indie films, which suggests a lack of experience.

Cross Media Convergence:
Inglourious Basterds:
General Electric own MSNBC, America's largest tv network which would allow for major TV advertising for the film. NBC also own 26 other television channels which could broadcast trailers and DVD release schedules for promotion. on the Internet, it could be premiered on Hulu.com, a video site shared by GE and news corp. they could also add magazine advertisments in a magazine they own, SciFi magazine. after the films release, posters + merchandise could be sold on ShopNBC.com
This is England:
Film4, being one of the production companies, could premiere trailers on their channel, and their owners channel, channel 4. this is not a very large audience, so it would rely on people's opinions and forums and reviews on the internet to give this film free promotion.
n T.V. E.g. film 4 & channel 4

TRAILER PREMIERE AT CANNES FILM FESTIVAL
Quentin Tarantino accelerated the speed of the production so the film could be edited and premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2009., where the film competed for the Palme d'Or. Tarantino then announced at the premiere that the film would be re-edited in June before its ultimate theatrical release allowing time to finish and reassemble scenes that were not shown for the hurried Cannes premiere
TV AND INTERNET TRAILER RELEASE DATE
The first Inglourious Basterds trailer was released to both TV and Internet audiences on 26 Feb 2009, with a 2 minute official teaser trailer which did not really give any details about film or its plot, it simple promoted the fact it was a Tarantino movie and the cast.
The next Official release date for the 2nd trailer for both TV and Internet audiences was 9 Jul 2009 which was another 2 minute trailer of the re-edited and cut less hurriedly, which highlighted new story issues and showed a few more members of the cast and some important events of the film.
These trailers were cut into their less revealing, more mysterious trailers that do not divulge into major plot points. Tarantino used this for effect to keep the mystery and the hype around his new film as it was already a big topic of debate after a decade of speculation.
POSTERS
Tarantino released 3 teaser posters on the 20th Feb 2009 for Inglorious Basterds
These 3 posters, all released on the same date contain the same tagline 'Once upon a time in Nazi-occupied France..' and 'THE NEW FILM BY QUENTIN TARANTINO 2009'.
6 days before the first official Trailer release, these posters were released for effect as it fueled the topic of debate over this film and to add a feel of mystery towards the film as no details are explained here.
Quentin Tarantino is a selling point on this poster as he is a well recognized name in the directing and film industries.
On the next 5 posters, all released on 11 may 2009, once again no more details are divulged from them about the film which keeps the mysterious feel to the film
These posters use the actors names and one half of the film name[ 'Basterds' ] so the audience can recognise the film and the cast in it. this was simply an introduction and promotion of the main actors of the film.

Eli Roth's role in this film is a supporting actor in this film. The fact of his casting is as a cameo role as he is well known in the genre for his directing roles. The main idea is a sort of 'grindhouse' appeal and the attraction of die hard fans, as they would recognise them from the specialized knowledge of the genre.
Michael Fassbender as Lt. Archie Hicox
Michaels Fassbenders appeal is exactly the same as Eli Roth's as they are both directors in this genre.
Mike Myers as General Ed Fenech
Mainly A Cameo role, but Mike Myers is used as he is famous for his portayal of British characters with a Strong British accent (Austin Powers) and is supposed to portray a typical British man.
Harvey Keitel as the OSS commander who agrees to Deal
Harvey Keitels's role in Inglorious Basterds is purely a cameo and a reference for Quentin Tarantino fans as he has appeared in many of his famous movies (Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Resevoir Dogs) and is cast for the die hard Tarantino fans to recognise.
Samuel L Jackson as Narrator(uncredited)
Samuel L Jackson was cast because of his distinctive voice and his roles in many famous Tarantino movies (Pulp Fiction was his most iconic role)
Quentin Tarantino as First Scalped Soldier and American Soldier shot in Tower(uncredited)
Quentin Tarantino has a signature of casting himself in his own movies. This would appeal to die hard fans of Tarantino's movies and a grindhouse appeal to a specialized knowledge audience.
